About Mirna

Currently, Mirna Martinez is the executive director of the Southeastern Connecticut Community Land Trust.  With this non-profit organization she is working to increase the accessibility of homeownership in our region.  Only 38% of households in New London are homeowner households. 

 

Mirna has served as chair of the New London Long Term Recovery Education Committee.  She was chosen by the Mayor of New London to lead a team of about twenty volunteers to identify the issues the community is facing due to COVID-19.  

 

During Mirna’s three terms on the New London Board of Education Member, she served as Chair of The Board, the Finance Committee, Chair of the Policy Committee, and Chair of the School Facilities and Program Design Committee. As a member of the Board of Education, Mirna advanced policies that support equity, diversity, accessibility, and environmental responsibility.  She networked with other districts to share ideas and collaborate in support of public education.  

 

In February of 2019, Mirna Martinez ran for CT’s 39th district State Representative seat in a special election.  She received the endorsements of The Day newspaper, CT Chapter Sierra Club, NARAL, CT Police and Fire Union, Our Revolution, The Political Revolution and she was one of only two– third party candidates to qualify for a full Connecticut Campaign Finance Grant. 

 

She holds a Master of Science degree in Bilingual Education and has teaching experience in Boston, New York City and New London.  She was a co-founder of New London Parent Advocates and a co-founder of Re:public Ed, a pro-public education nonprofit organization.
