New London can be a hard town. If you don’t know the right people, if you don’t have the right connections, it can be a hard place to prosper. A lot of us have had doors closed in our faces. Doors closed on our business ideas, doors closed on our leadership potential, doors closed on our dreams. Many of us want to leave the first chance we get.
Opening Doors is a campaign to do just that– open doors for people. Our campaign is about opening doors to opportunity, opening doors for prosperity, and opening doors for new leadership in our community.
The truth is, it’s hard for many of us to fill our fridge right now. It’s hard for many of us to pay our rent every month. And, even when we can pay it, we’re not sure we should, because the apartment has so much that needs fixing. Others of us are choosing between making the mortgage payment and the car payment. Summer camp gets more expensive every year. Each year feels like we are getting more and more squeezed by bills. Things just feel like they are getting tighter and tighter. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
We believe that everyone— Black, Latino, poor, LGBTQ, immigrant —- deserves the same opportunities for a good life —- good, well-paying jobs, affordable housing including home ownership, a strong education system that loves and supports our children, good health care, and much more. While we can’t solve some of these problems locally, because they need national solutions, there are concrete things we can do here and now in this community to make life more livable for all of us.
That’s what our campaign is about.
